'The Book of CAT' by Andy Robinson is an outrageously clever, ridiculously absurd, and totally unexpectedly profound tale that follows Jasper-Cat and his adopted clowder of Brisbane based moggies on a sensationally surreal journey in search of a mythical paradise “BrisVegas.”
What begins as a simple night of feline insomnia, initially caused by an overflowing litter tray, turns into a picaresque odyssey filled with a vast ensemble of rogue robot vacuum cleaners, dodgy real estate gigs, rascally electricians, meat tray raffles, and ultimately, a tragic accident involving a crate of Swedish adult toys.
Written in a style that channels Douglas Adams, Monty Python, and a touch of Samuel Beckett, the author delivers a gleefully chaotic satire of suburban life, ego-driven leadership, and the illusion of utopia... all taken from ankle-height up. The humour is relentless, the dialogue bizarrely brilliant, and the inclusion of invented cat slang is nothing short of genius.
Characters like the neurotic Jasper-Cat, old timer George, rebellious Tofu because "Bacon" is a daft name for a cat, and supermodel diva Giselle. are all both instantly lovable and hilariously flawed. The world they inhabit, both real and imagined, is brimming with wit, social commentary, and an almost Shakespearean like sense of tragi-comedy.
That being said, the book’s surrealism certainly isn’t for everyone.
Entire chapters of “meow” only dialogue may test some readers’ patience, and the plot joyfully veers off course at every conceivable turn. But for those willing to embrace the ensuing madness, this is a uniquely funny, oddly touching, and wildly inventive book.
