We're so very nearly there now...
A Contemporary Satirical Fiction
A warm, British/Australian-style
sharply comic literary satire about books, writing, Hollywood, late-blooming
dreams and the real price of creative success. Funny and absurd on the surface,
but increasingly emotional underneath. A moving novel about what happens when
an ordinary man's lifelong dream finally comes true—and turns out to be
considerably more complicated than he'd hoped. Localad's decision about what
parts of himself aren't for sale is what makes the book matter.
More specifically, it sits
comfortably across:
- Satirical fiction — Hollywood, studio executives, market research, franchise culture, publishing, contracts and the commodification of creativity are all targets.
- Comic fiction — the humour is fundamental to the narrative voice rather than simply occasional jokes.
- Contemporary literary fiction — beneath the comedy, the novel is about ageing, grief, friendship, artistic integrity, regret, recognition and what actually constitutes a worthwhile life.
- Show-business / Hollywood satire — the transformation of Purradise from Localad's deeply personal manuscript into a Brick Holland action vehicle gives the middle of the novel a strong entertainment-industry satire.
- Late-life / second-chance fiction — Localad being sixty-four is important. This isn't the conventional story of a young writer trying to make it. It's about somebody discovering surprisingly late that the dream he thought had passed him by hasn't. And then discovering that getting the dream isn't necessarily the same thing as getting what he wanted.
- Books-about-books / metafiction-adjacent fiction — a novel about a novelist whose novel becomes a movie, after which the original novel becomes successful because readers ultimately discover that:
THE BOOK'S A LOT BETTER THAN THE MOVIE.
As you can see, the cover art is completed. The content has been created, edited and fully formatted. And the ISBN has been applied for and is now awaiting approval.
And then... it finally becomes fully AVAILABLE for you to own!
